If you’re anything like me in the past, you probably use your closet as a dumping ground. You get something, use it once, then throw it into the abyss. Perhaps eventually, you’ll go in and organize it… but a few weeks later, you’ll fall back into your old habits.
Closet organization doesn’t have to be hard! And whatever work you put into it will be rewarded by having clothes and accessories that last for years to come. Here are our best tips for organizing your closet:
Make it easy to identify closet contents
A place for everything, and everything in it’s place. There should be clearly designated spots for clothing to hang, shoes, jewelry, and other accessories. Some of us also likes to hide Christmas presents in her closet - to each, their own. The point is that it’s obvious to you where everything is, so that you aren’t forced to mess up your closet in the process of finding something!
Another easy way to organize is by colour or clothing type. It’s easier to find what you’re looking for when you have put visual cues in place. The clothing part of my closet is organized by clothing type - blazers, blouses, skirts, pants… you get the idea.
For your designer handbags, we recommend PursePort for storage. PursePort tags make it very easy to identify different handbags without taking them out of protective covers. More on that, next.
Protect closet contents from dust and other elements
Some people use mothballs to keep moths from damaging fabrics, but that’s not the only solution for keeping your belongings safe from the elements. Undercovers are an excellent solution for handbag storage that work specifically to protect designer handbags. Sun damage and dust can easily degrade the quality of a designer handbag and it can easily be avoided!
Another closet organization tip that most people don’t realize - when you bring dry cleaning home, take off the plastic cover. There are harmful chemicals present that can break down fabrics!
Maintain the shape of handbags and purses
Do you have tall riding boots or expensive handbags in your closet? Both require special care and a supportive inset to maintain their shape without degradation. We have a product that can help! Save Our Shape (S.O.S.) is a handbag insert that is inflatable and customizable to any size bag.
Schedule a Monthly Closet Clean Up
Chances are, if it goes on your calendar, it will get done. If you don’t write it down, it’s easy to forget. So schedule a monthly closet clean up to reevaluate if there are new items that require special care or other belongings of yours strewn on the floor that aren’t properly stored. You’ll be glad you did. Clear closet, clear mind!
