There’s some debate in the purse world about the difference between purse organizers and purse liners. In many ways, the do similar things. Both liners and organizers are inserted into bags to contain items within a purse. Liners are usually made to fit certain sizes of bags and work within the confines of your purse to protect its interior.
However, there are differences.
Purse liners take up the entire interior space of a purse, and its focus is on protecting your bag from spills or damage, rather than organizing. They have tall sides to shield the lining of your bag from spills. Liners aren’t really designed to be transferable, either.
Organizers are an alternative to using the pockets of your bags and allow you to switch your essentials from bag to bag with relatively little trouble. They have lower sides and rest on the bottom of your purse, corralling loose items.
I once bought a Samorga purse liner. It’s a felt liner that has interior and exterior pockets, and it is really big. So big, in fact, that I was constantly losing things inside it.
The pockets are so deep that it’s hard to find things, and the sides sag!
I’ve also used a MaiTai Collection Birkin 35 liner, which is a beautiful gray linen liner with interior pockets. While the linen is much prettier than the Samorga’s green felt, it had many of the Samorga’s faults: it was hard to find my items in the deep pockets, and it didn’t fit very well.
You can see what I mean; my items are loose inside the big pockets, but it still wouldn’t fit with my purse and iPad. Also, it looks a bit like a diaper bag. Talk about un-glamorous!
It turns out, I am not a purse liner girl. I much prefer the purse organizer, which fits neatly inside my bag and organizes my essentials without deep pockets and unsightly, sagging sides.
Purse liners might be more protective, but honestly, I feel that an organizer does a much better job allowing my designer bag to be used as its makers intended it. I use a le Mobile organizer, which I love. The faux lambskin is beautiful, and I have a much easier time seeing my things. Plus, it won’t break the bank, and it’s still very luxurious.
For me, it’s worth it in time savings alone, and you still get some protection in your bag by keeping your cosmetics secured.
Recently, though, I bought a total indulgence at Canipelli Firenze in Naples, Florida. These Nappa leather bag organizers are the height of luxury in organization.
Buttery soft leather, hand crafted, and gorgeous, they are delightful. If you’re a handbag purist and have some spare change lying around, then they’re a real treat.
There are two sizes, and you can order them via phone. They’ll ship them to you! There’s a nude interior and a red interior, so you can match it to the inside of your bag, or, better yet, make a contrasting statement.
Oh, and if you think the design looks familiar, you might be on to something!
